Illegal bird trapping is causing a severe decline in wild bird populations. To address this crisis, conservation experts from Vietnam, Thailand, and China gathered for an online seminar hosted by Oriental Bird Club and BirdLife International Asia on January 17, 2025. Representing WildAct, Dr. Trang Nguyen shared efforts to protect wild birds and discussed innovative solutions for the future.
Wild Birds at Risk of Extinction
Bird trapping has become increasingly rampant in recent years. According to BirdLife International, millions of migratory birds are captured annually across Southeast Asia. Invisible mist nets are stretched across migration paths, trapping countless rare species.
In Vietnam, hunting hotspots are concentrated in coastal areas, wetlands, and key migratory stopover sites. Despite government interventions, illegal hunting persists due to the high market demand for pet birds, food, and traditional rituals.
Key Threats to Wild Birds
Rampant mist netting: Thin, nearly invisible nets trap birds mid-flight. Hunters also use decoy birds or artificial sounds to lure them.
Habitat loss: Deforestation and wetland destruction leave migratory birds with fewer safe havens.
High market demand: The pet trade, exotic food industry, and cultural practices drive excessive hunting.
Initial Efforts and Ongoing Challenges
Conservation organizations like WildAct have taken critical steps to reduce illegal bird hunting, including:
Patrol collaborations to detect and remove hundreds of mist nets in key areas.
Awareness campaigns to educate communities on the ecological impact of bird hunting.
Empowering local communities, especially women, to engage in bird conservation efforts.
Despite positive progress, illegal trapping remains a complex challenge. Stronger measures and community involvement are essential for sustainable bird protection.
WildAct’s Key Conservation Strategies:
- Stronger law enforcement: Partnering with local authorities to monitor hunting hotspots.
- Education & awareness: Organizing real-world conservation programs for students, teachers, and communities.
- Citizen science: Encouraging the public to report illegal bird hunting via the SMART monitoring app.
- Innovative conservation solutions: Developing alternative livelihoods for local communities to reduce dependence on bird hunting.
